THE MINOTAUR
Location: Westport.
Established: 2005.
The Minotaur is the most famous concert venue west of DC and south of New York City before hitting Cali, and is open twenty-four hours a day. By day, the Minotaur boasts a cafe with good food, an open mic for any musician or poet, and a great environment to meet people. By night, it hosts famous headlining acts, as well as a slam poetry competition on the first of every month, and whenever neither of those things are going on, it's a dance club that spins hiphop, reggae, and latin beats. For nightlife and meeting people, it's a hard place to beat. $10 to get in; 18 to enter, 21 to drink.

OUTSIDE
From outside, the Minotaur looks like it was transplanted from New York City's lower east side. It's got a brick face purposefully covered in graffiti from various artists, both local and nonlocal. The windows on the second floor are larger than those on the first, and those on the first have wrought iron around their bases. The door itself is entirely glass, but you would never be able to tell readily: from inside, numerous papers and notes are tacked up expressing the latest happenings all around Kansas City, from bandmate requests to free local shows to sociopolitical events.
INSIDE
[First Floor]
+ Inside the door: Once inside, you have no choice but to turn left. You will first be met by a bouncer who will check your ID, and whom you will pay. Then there is coat check in that hallway area. Straight ahead there is a staircase, but you have to turn to your left to see the first floor proper. For purposes of description, this position wherein the whole of the first floor is visible from this entrance point, is called Point A.
+ From Point A, to the left: The bar & lounge. Taking two steps up, as this area is slightly raised as well as carpeted, this is the bar area. The bar is long and has a mirror barback; the bar is also where you will be able to order and pickup your food. At the bar are grungey looking iron stools, but they're molded to be comfortable for anybody. Around this area are various comfy couches, recliners, and chairs, giving a bohemian grunge feel. There are coffee tables made of glass which have art pressed beneath them, perfect for resting food and drink.
+ From Point A, to the right: The deejay booth. The booth is inset into the wall so that it's entirely flat, and only the glass of it is visible, along with an inobtrusive door that blends in with the wall. Against this wall are also two long black couches for times when people want to watch dancing as opposed to do it, or if people prefer to sit closer to the stage than the bar area during a performance.
+ From Point A, the back wall: The stage. The stage is black and four feet high, and where all of the bands perform, as well as where the open mic is located all day long, or where people can dance on club nights. The sound system is inlaid all around the club for optimal fidelity anywhere.
+ From Point A, the floor: The floor itself is made of smooth wood and, at night, is entirely clear for dancing or for standing and watching performances. If it is a low-key performance, as in on slam poetry competitions, the couches from the day will be kept out. By day, there are various chairs, couches, and tables much like those always kept in the lounge area.
[Second Floor]
+ Stairway: The stairway mentioned at the "inside the door" section above, which exists back at the end of the initial entrance hallway, is a spiral one of the same iron that decorates the facade and the barstools. Obviously, it leads you upstairs.
+ Offices: Once at the top of the flight of stairs, directly to the left are the windows, because that is the inside of the face of the building. When facing the windows, to the left, inlaid into the wall, is an inobtrustive, hidden sort of door, that is locked to anyone but Minotaur personnel. Behind that door is the owner's office and the security office.
+ Balcony: However, the rest of the second level is only half a floor, serving as a balcony that looks over the rest of the club below. The balcony is furnished much like the lounge, but with a bit more of a private feel to it, and there are draperies against the wall giving the whole thing a very vintage, bohemian grunge feel. There are speakers in the walls here as well so that sound is not compromised.
